Automated Damage Documentation for Container Handling

Providing clear evidence of freight damages and thus, avoiding eventually non-justified claims for compensation requires an optical documentation of container conditions during the unloading sequence.

MoMoSys - A Mobile Monitoring System for Automated Damage Documentation in Container Handling achieves this objective by simultaneously taking high-resolution digital pictures of each container from 5 sides and storing them in a database. The unloading operation does not need to be interrupted - pictures are taken automatically as the container is passing the cameras that are mounted on the container bridge. An OCR-software developed especially for MoMoSys detects the container identification code on the digital images. This software can also distinguish between single container movement and spreader twin-operation where two smaller containers are picked and unloaded from the vessel in parallel. The container code(s) detected by OCR is (are) automatically compared with the vessel's freight list stored in the terminal operator's database. By this, an unambiguous container identification is guaranteed.

Together, the high resolution digital images of each container and the respective container ID represent a data set that is transferred by WLAN and stored in a database for documentation and localisation purpose. Depending on legal requirements data may be retained for two years or more.

A web-based application developed around the database allows the different parties involved in container transport to access the data via the internet. Depending on individual access rights, the terminal operator, the container owner, a container leasing customer, a forwarder or even an insurance company may access the database and retrieve information on container location and condition.

NTB expects remarkable savings by introducing MoMoSys on all of their container bridges thus achieving a 100% documentation in their container handling operation.
